Grand Canyon State

The State of Arizona started putting the nickname “Grand Canyon State” on its license plates as early as 1940.  The Legislature made the nickname official with the passage of HB 2549 in 2011.

Arizona Celebrates Statehood

Arizona has a lot to celebrate on Valentine’s Day because it achieved statehood on February 14, 1912. This year, celebrate Arizona at the 102nd Statehood Day celebration at the Capitol Museum with the Secretary of State, Arizona’s Poet Laureate and other dignitaries.

You can learn about Arizona’s history with the online Arizona Time Capsule or read about the formation of Arizona’s territorial government. See also our earlier post with links to historical documents about the path to statehood.

Finally, see what Arizona looked like before it became a state in the Capitol Museum’s online exhibit “Arizona Approaching Statehood”.
